A commitment to working with customers in partnership and to developing the most efficient and cost effective robotic and automation solutions have been instrumental in the continuing success of Leicester-based ATM Automation Limited which celebrates 30 years in business this year (see Plate 2).

In its three decades, the company has experienced remarkable growth, developing from a single system supplier to one with a diverse and highly sophisticated product range.

ATM now claims a 30 per cent market share in the UK robotics industry with end users ranging from plastic injection moulding companies to those involved in component assembly, telecommunications and the automotive sector.

Based in a 18,000sq.ft headquarters complex on Blaby Industrial Park in Leicester, ATM has a turnover of £81 million annually and employs 50 personnel across the spectrum of technical, sales, customer support, manufacture and assembly.

Its customer portfolio is truly international with exports to countries such as The Netherlands and Scandinavia contributing in excess of 20 per cent of turnover. The recent appointment of three new partner/distributors in Australia, Poland and Ireland will further increase the organisation's global presence.

As ATM managing director Robert Hopper explains, with 30 years experience to draw on, the future for the organisation is looking very positive.

"Our strong belief from the outset that developing relationships that were much more than simply that of a customer/supplier has been fundamental to ATM's success. That foresight in our early days has reaped rewards and will continue to do so because in manufacturing industry these days there is a great emphasis on customers working as partners with suppliers.
