An automated manufacturing installation for a leading scaffolding systems and work platform manufacturer in the Irish Republic is the latest joint project to be completed by Güdel UK and Millennium Controls Ltd since the recent signing of a collaboration agreement between the two companies.

Featuring a 6 m by 3 m Güdel X-Y table, which provides consistent positional accuracy to ±0.1 mm, the new unit uses purpose-designed hydraulic tooling to automatically secure up to nine tube connectors in a single operation. The system’s high acceleration and deceleration capabilities also enable the equipment to achieve cycle times up to 20 percent faster than the customer’s previous manufacturing methods (Plate 10).

“The proven accuracy and in-service performance of our multiple-axis positioning equipment has been complemented by Millennium’s advanced automation and controls technology,” says Güdel UK’s Managing Director, Gary Ottley. “This has enabled us to develop and manufacture a customised turnkey solution much quicker than either of us could have done alone.”

Millennium’s Managing Director, Paul Murphy agrees, “The project has run remarkably smoothly and the finished installation offers our customer the flexibility to accommodate a wide range of finished product variants – as well as increase throughput and reduce production costs.”
