A two-stage coating system that combines the corrosion protection of an advanced thick film coating thick film with a thermoset spray allowing optimum colour choice flexibility has been announced by Plascoat Systems. Development work in the UK and pilot trials in France have reportedly seen the successful integration of the two coating systems to meet the demands of in-house and specialist coaters.

Coaters have been looking to avoid the coating material stocking and repeated clean-out and set-up costs associated with fluidised bed colour coating of small volumes.

It is now believed possible for polyester or epoxy polyester to be sprayed on to Plascoat's PPA571 in whatever standard base colour immediately after the Performance Polymer Alloy has been dip coated and before cooling and final curing.

The process means that PPA571 in only one colour has to be stocked and provides products with widescale coating benefits.

PPA571 is applied directly on to cleaned steel without the need for a primer. Application areas being targeted with the new system include battery housings and street furniture.
