Copper-aluminium alloys resist corrosion

Copper-aluminium alloys resist corrosion

Keywords Alloys, Corrosion resistant

A family of aluminium-copper alloys that resist corrosion and are easily machined has reportedly been developed by UMS Swiss Metalworks Ltd, Dornach, Switzerland. The alloys are said to be especially resistant to industrial effluent, seawater, slightly acid/mildly alkaline salt solutions, dilute acids, and corrosive atmospheres. Aluminium content ranges between 6 and 11 per cent; small amounts of nickel, iron, manganese, and lead are included in some alloys. For example, one alloy has composition Cu, 8-11A1, 1-2Pb, with maximum 0.5Mn and 0.5Fe.

This alloy has a duplex phase structure with a dispersion of fine lead particles. It is said to offer high resistance to corrosion and wear, together with very good blanking, milling, and machining properties. It provides tensile strength of 550 MPA in flat products, and elongation of 15 per cent.

Another alloy has additions of nickel and iron to provide a good combination of high strength and resistance to corrosion, oxidation, fatigue and wear. The alloy reportedly has good hot-working properties and retain its strength at moderately elevated temperatures. Its composition is Cu, 8.5-9.5Al 3-4Fe, 4-6Ni, 1-2Mn, 1-2Ph. Its tensile strength is 650MPA (95ksi), and elongation is 8 per cent.

Applications include high-pressure fittings and engine components, spark-resistant tools and machine components; compression nuts, roller bearings, and gear components, and general marine applications.
