Advanced protective coatings from Jotun Paints were chosen for the recent redecoration of Saunders Close Industrial Estate, Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, UK.

Industrial estates built from coil coated steel cladding can prove a problem when it comes to maintenance. Coil coated steel when new can look most attractive but it does suffer from natural weathering and corrosion in an industrial climate and because of the nature of the cladding standard alkyds give poor adhesion and cannot be used for refurbishment.

The Maintenance Manager of the Heritage Foundation, owners of the Saunders Close Industrial Estate contacted Jotun-Henry Clark Ltd the UK member of the worldwide Jotun group to help them with this problem.

Jotun specified "Benga W"one of their products to protect the coil coated steel cladding.

Specially formulated for the protection of such cladding, "Benga W" is based on a pure siliconised alkyd, and claims a much higher resistance to weathering and abrasion than standard alkyds. "Benga W" systems will reportedly last for at least ten years without maintenance, and cost-effectiveness is further increased at the beginning of their working life by one-coat application.

"Benga W" can be applied by brush, roller or airless spray, and has excellent wetting properties to ensure good adhesion. It is stated to be quick-drying; at 20°C, and with a relative humidity of 50 per cent it will be touch-dry in four to five hours.

"Benga W" is available in a range of over three hundred BS 4800, PAL and NCS colours. In addition, Jotun can readily provide customised colours for logos and liveries.

Windows and door frames

Since all windows and door frames were made of wood, "Demidekk" a waterborne wood stain based on a unique Jotun alkyd/acrylic technology was specified.

"Demidekk" has long been used in housing estates with great success, offering, it is believed, at least six years maintenance-free protection for external timber and joinery. It is available in over 200 colours from the Jotun colour range and can also be supplied in most BS 4800 and RAL colours.

Being thixotropic, "Demidekk" is easy to apply by brush, roller or airless spray, and gives a silk finish on both new and previously treated woods. It has low environmental impact through its waterborne formulation.

Personal and shutter doors

For areas that require protection but also need a decorative impact Jotun specified "Fenom" overcoated with "Bengalac". Both coatings are suitable for the protection of metal and timber surfaces, internally and externally, and are available in most BS 4800 and RAL colours.

"Fenom" is a semi-matt alkyd paint and was used as the undercoat for "Bengalac" a high-gloss alkyd paint, which has good durability and gloss retention.
