With so many grades and sizes of UK and foreign steel available, matching the correct grade for the job in hand is a time-consuming business, even for the most experienced specifiers. Until now, the most useful tool for specifiers has been the Steel Specifications book, published by the UK's leading steel industry authority the UK Steel Association, which has now launched a technological advance for industry users SteelSpec, a CD-ROM which delivers a response within seconds to specification queries.

SteelSpec provides comprehensive data on all the aspects that are needed to make a steel specification the chemical, mechanical and physical properties of steels and steel products made to British, European, proprietary and other standards, together with details of UK steel producers. It can be used on any PC with Windows 95.

The sheer number of steel forms hot rolled, cold finished, stainless, bright, flats, engineering bars, strip, hollows, coil, wire to name a selection will ensure that SteelSpec is going to be welcomed by all those involved in deciding which material to use when designing or making products. It will make design, production and purchase decisions easier, faster and more accurate.

"Introducing new technology to steel specification will have a positive knock-on effect on UK industry as a whole", says Dr Mike Walsh, UK Steel Association Standards Manager, who has helped develop SteelSpec. "Each individual design project has its own criteria for which the correct specifications are critical for cost-effectiveness and performance. A quick and reliable tool, such as SteelSpec will help to shorten the design to completion process."
