Gagemark Limited has now introduced its new System 2000 range of surface cleaning equipment (Plate 7). Being a truly wet process, System 2000 reportedly produces a highly effective surface action suitable for the removal of oxidations, paint and other surface preparations from all hard surfaces such as steel, iron and aluminium structures and components. The System also claims to eliminate environmental problems associated with dry blasting and chemical systems.

By mixing an abrasive medium with water inside the pressure vessel itself, every particle is coated with a protective film of water which, by acting as a lubricant, results in a rubbing action at the surface being cleaned. This allows selective abrasion at the work surface, meaning that paints and oxidations can be quickly removed without damaging the structure being cleaned. Alternatively, by varying the working pressure and grade of abrasive, steel and iron surfaces can be correctly profiled prior to repainting.

In addition to this specific abrasive cleaning action, the water saturation results in ultra-low dust levels due to each particle of abrasive being effectively encased in a capsule of water. System 2000 is therefore claimed to be ideal for use in confined areas such as inside factories and industrial installations. Furthermore, the process is completely spark-free and safe to use where such considerations apply.

Gagemark has also developed a range of tailored abrasives for use in the System 2000 equipment. These are calcium-carbonate based, stated to be totally non-toxic and suitable for indoor use. By selecting the appropriate abrasive, it is possible either to enhance the gentle rubbing action (select rounded, low hardness GX grades) or achieve a more profiled finish prior to re-painting (select sharp-edged, DS grades).
