Keywords Sandvik Steel, Stainless steel, Wire

Two new grades of stainless steel spring wire have been launched by Swedish steelmaker AB Sandvik Steel.

The first new grade, designated Sandvik SAF 2205, is a duplex stainless steel which claims good corrosion resistance, superior to that of a standard stainless AISI 316. Laboratory tests, with aqueous solutions containing hydrogen sulphide and chlorides, are reported to have shown that SAF 2205 possesses particularly good resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Tests have also reportedly shown that SAF 2205 can be used at considerably higher temperatures and chloride contents than AISI 302/304 and 316 stainless steels, without pitting.

In addition, the grade claims high tensile and fatigue strength and good relaxation resistance at elevated temperatures. The service temperature range is 100-300°C. Key applications are in corrosive environments, the automotive industry and for aerosols.

The other specially developed grade is Sandvik 13RM19 a non-magnetic, stainless spring steel which combines high mechanical strength with a non-magnetic structure.

Sandvik 13RM19 is stated to be completely non-magnetic in all conditions and therefore has a combination of properties which have previously only been found in expensive cobalt/nickel base or copper/beryllium alloys.

It is also said to possess good fatigue properties and excellent ductility making it an ideal choice of material for springs and other high strength applications where ferromagnetic steels are unsuitable.

Typical applications where the grade can be used to advantage are components for the electronics, computing and instrumentation industries.
