British Timken, manufacturer of tapered roller bearing components, has been presented with the prestigious Conservationist of the Year Award.

The scheme is sponsored and organised by Eutectic Company Ltd, a leading company in welding brazing and thermal spray technology for the repair and maintenance of industrial plant.

One of the largest losses of profit in industry can be attributed to downtime. One of the main causes of downtime is the failure of critical components due to breakage and wear. The life of many of these components can be extended by reclamation. The use of modern welding and coating techniques has been developed over many years as a means of combating wear, breakage and corrosion of engineering components.

The award scheme rewards the company that has made the greatest savings in terms of monetary value, conservation of energy and natural resources through these processes.

British Timken was presented with first prize at the Company's Open Day which took place at their Duston, Northampton manufacturing plant, July 1998.

The company was praised for its "outstanding" entry. British Timken's continued dedication, together with Eutectics specialist knowledge, has ensured continued success with their tooling and other wear related applications. The company's entry included a total of 56 applications, resulting in savings of over £600,000 during the course of just 12 months, illustrating the outstanding environmental and cost saving benefits for British Timken.

The two finalists holding joint second place in the Conservationist of the Year Award were Bruhl UK Ltd and Pegler Ltd.

All entries for the award were described by Eutectics Managing Director, Derek Mack as being worthy of high commendation: "As conservation programmes and environmental issues become increasingly important, the Conservationist of the Year Award receives increasing recognition for its contribution to energy and natural resource management. All of the entries demonstrate that cost savings and conservation can go hand in hand. These techniques are now well proven throughout the world, and have significant impact on the life of manufacturing components."
