The first in a new generation of super technology colleges in the UK is set to have a secure future with a new style of galvanized fencing.

Birmingham's Ninestiles Technology College at Acocks Green is being secured with the support of Claydon Architectural Metalwork (CAP) which is supplying fencing materials, while Midlands-based Joseph Ash & Sons is galvanizing the fence free of charge to demonstrate its long life and low maintenance properties (Plate 5).

The specially-designed galvanized fencing is being hailed as a new way forward for education establishments which need to secure premises, yet want to remain attractive to pupils and in harmony with the local environment.

Being manufactured by a protected system developed by CAM, the fencing will comprise uprights of one-and-a-quarter inch mild steel crushed tube creating a wave design. It will also incorporate the Ninestiles name decoratively interwoven along each side of the college's entrance forming a total length of 31 metres.

After a number of major incidents at schools and colleges across the UK, how to best secure educational premises has been a major concern for education chiefs.

Joseph Ash Sales Manager, Ian Hiley, said: "Ninestiles has been redeveloped as a Technology College, and with the events of the last couple of years, security has been a primary consideration for the headmaster and his staff.

"We are happy to become involved along with CAM to show how security fencing can be better designed with low maintenance but not so that the premises end up looking like a fortress. The galvanized coating should provide up to 25 years of protection for the fence."

Headmaster, Dexter Hutt, was responsible for the design concept alongside designer, Claire Rycraft, ensuring that the fencing met security criteria but will also help in creating a strong identity and decorative surrounds for the college.
