Standards covering hundreds of types of steel for automotive use have been issued by the Japanese Iron and Steel Federation, in an effort to define a "common language" among users, manufacturers, and distributors. The seven product standards and two testing standards are the outcome of a committee formed in late 1995 that consisted of various automobile associations and technical groups that joined with the Japan Iron and Steel Federation. The standards are available in a 12-page booklet through the Japan Steel Information Center, New York.
The standards cover hot and cold-rolled sheet, and various coated sheets including galvannealed and electrolytic. Each standard has multiple types; for example, galvannealed steel has 23 types, including eight with hot-rolled substrates and 15 with cold-rolled substrates. Electrolytic zinc-coated sheet has 24 types; electrolytic zinc-iron alloy coated sheet has 16.
