Zeneca Resins b.v. of Waalwijk, The Netherlands, has been awarded the coveted internationally recognized ISO 14001 certificate for environmental management. The certification, which was carried out by Bureau Veritas Quality International (BVQI), proves that the environmental management system, based on the ISO 14001 standard, is in place and fully operational at Zeneca Resins b.v. The certification is the crowning glory of the project that was set up in 1996 and has taken over two years to bear fruit.

Zeneca Resins has adopted the following basic principles:

  • all the relevant laws, regulations and international agreements in the field of safety, health and the environment are to be adhered to;

  • the work is to be carried out safely and without adverse effects on the health of its staff and people living in the vicinity;

  • the environmental impact is to be limited to a minimum;

  • continuous improvement.

The care Zeneca Resins takes to preserve the environment can be demonstrated by the following:

  • The development of water-based products.

  • The company has its own wastewater treatment plant.

  • The use of vapour return systems (in bulk raw material transfer) and gravity-based unloading of raw materials (no displacement emissions).

  • The installation in 1988 of an, at that time, innovative emission purification system (biofiltration for purifying gases released in emulsion production).

  • The installation of a new closed-circuit cooling water system (ending thermal impact on Waalwijk harbour).

  • The installation of a catalytic oxidation system to replace the existing off-gas purification systems.

  • The modification of existing sewage systems (improved dual sewage system).

  • The installation of burners with reduced NOx emissions ("low-NOx") in the steam boilers.

These projects are all mentioned in Zeneca Resins b.v.'s second Company Environmental Plan (BMP-2), formally approved in July 1998, and the Energy Efficiency Plan (EEP), which was set up a few years ago. Both plans result from signing Covenants. In addition to these Covenants, Zeneca Resins b.v. has also signed the Packaging Covenant II.
