Key new plant takes galvanizing firm into 1999

New key plant has been installed at the start of the New Year in a £200,000 investment programme at Scotland's largest galvanizing company, Glasgow-based Scottish Galvanizers Ltd.

A main feature of the scheme has been the replacement of the existing 13.4 metres long galvanizing bath, or furnace - the core of the hot dip galvanizing process - with a new and wider bath, weighing 35 tonnes. Efficient new burners have been installed and the whole heating system updated. At the same time, electronic control and monitoring systems have been extensively modernised.

"Taken together, these developments will further improve product quality, giving us the capability for increasing throughput to up to nine tonnes an hour", said Stephen Milnes, who was appointed director and general manager at Scottish Galvanizers Ltd in December 1998.

"An ongoing investment programme, coupled with the very best in working practices, ensures that we become even more customer focused, to increase our market share and strengthen our place as the galvanizing firm in Scotland."

Scottish Galvanizers has an annual turnover of £3 million a year, a staff of 50, and with the new equipment now has the capability to galvanize up to 20,000 tonnes of metal a year. The firm is one of 17 companies of Wedge Group Galvanizing which operate from different locations and offer a nation-wide galvanizing service across the UK. Developments at Glasgow follow a review of the group, completed by B.E. Wedge Holdings, which acquired the companies in December 1996.
