Archco-Rigidon protects Severn Trent gate valves

As part of its programme for improving the water supply from the Ladybower Reservoir, Bamford, Derbyshire, Severn Trent Water has undertaken the refurbishment of the twin valve towers including the installation of eight 600mm and eight 900mm gate valves, the original valves having suffered severe corrosion damage. Owing to the size and location of these valves, replacing them is a long and expensive process involving the use of a specialist diving team to install inflatable stoppers in the inlet pipework.

It was therefore important that the replacement valves be coated to ensure long-term protection. The coating material selected for this application by Repair Protection & Maintenance Ltd was Winn & Coales' Archco-Rigidon 400 WCA, which is a polyester based flake glass filled coating offering excellent corrosion/erosion resistance and a proven track record in similar and more hazardous environments. Archco-Rigidon 400 WCA also has the necessary potable water certification for this application. These flake glass filled coating systems are becoming increasingly more popular where long- term protection is sought and where life-term costs are properly taken into consideration.

The valves were sent by the manufacturers, Glenfield and Kennedy of Kilmarnock, to the Pontefract, West Yorkshire, works of Repair Protection & Maintenance Ltd (part of the RPM Group), who are experienced corrosion engineers and approved applicators of the full range of Archco-Rigidon protective coating systems. After completion of the lining process, the coating on all 16 valves was thickness checked and spark tested to ensure a pinhole-free surface. On completion the valves were returned to the manufacturer for final assembly and delivery to site.
