Components increase measuring instrument service life

Keywords Rubis-Précis, Measurement, Service life

French manufacturer Rubis-Précis has launched a range of precision pins and bearings made of high-tech materials which, it is claimed, increases the service life and wear resistance of measurement instruments (Plate 14).

According to Rubis-Précis, its high-tech components not only benefit from a much longer service life than that of conventional parts, but they also have a relatively low density (density 4 for industrial ceramics, industrial ruby and sapphire), reducing the weight of moving parts. The parts are "mirror" polished (roughness 0.05µ) to minimise the coefficient of friction and to obtain the highest possible measuring accuracy. Usual machining tolerances are around 5µ.

High-tech materials such as industrial sapphire (the hardest material after diamond, measuring 1800 Vickers), tungsten carbide with nickel binder (hardness 1500 Vickers), stainless steel and titanium are used to obtain components of exceptional quality. These extra-hard materials are fully biocompatible, entirely corrosion-resistant, chemically inert and capable of withstanding high temperatures and pressures (sapphire has a melting point of 2,050°C).

These new-generation pins and bearings are used in sectors as varied as water and gas meters, electrical measuring instruments, maritime compasses, medical spirometers, altimeters and other air navigation instruments, in micro-motors, tachometers and control systems.

Rubis-Précis specialises in the manufacture of high-protection components and sub-assemblies according to customers' specifications. The full range of products is available to buy direct from the company in France or from its UK agent, PI-KEM.
