Bechtel Water Technology, Engineering and Construction services contractor to North West Water, recently drew up a programme for the renovation of five of North West Water's pipebridges on the Haweswater Aqueduct: Sabden Brook, Hyndbury Brook, Wennington Pipebridge, Lune Pipebridge, and a pipebridge over the historic Leeds-Liverpool canal. To give long-term protection to the pipelines - all carrying treated water - Winn & Coales Steelcoat 400 system was used. All work has now been completed by Daniel Contractors Ltd and their sub-contractors Repair, Protection & Maintenance Ltd (RPM) of Pontefract.

The five pipebridges are over 20 metres in length and each carry two 44 inch, one 48 inch and one 54 inch pipelines.

RPM first air pressure water jetted the pipes and pipebridge structures to remove all loose coatings, followed by wire brushing, then application of the Steelcoat system.

Steelcoat 400 consists of Denso Hi-Tack Primer, followed by Denso Hi-Tack Tape to form the main corrosion prevention layer. This is then followed by Denso Reinforcing Tape, which is spirally applied to give a 25mm overlap. On this project, the tape was then given a final urethane topcoat to complete the tough, weather resistant Steelcoat system.
