New generation of Sanmac Hollow Bar

Keywords Sandvik Steel, Stainless steel, Machining

Sandvik Steel has also announced the launch of a new generation of Sanmac Hollow Bar which it claims offers even better machining characteristics, including a potential doubling of cutting tool life (Plate 2).

Plate 2 New generation Sandvik Sanmac Hollow Bar, for machining, from TW Metals, doubles tool life

Sanmac claims the new generation gives better machine utilisation through improved cutting speeds and feed rates as well as more pieces cut from each cutting tool. Potential user benefits are said to include faster through-put, longer tool life, reduced stoppage time and, therefore, reduced overhead costs.

In machining tests, with Sanmac stainless steel Hollow Bar grades AISI 304, 304L, 316, 316L, a doubling of tool life can be shown, a performance which Sandvik claims is well ahead of the competition. A key feature of Sanmac Hollow Bar production is the control of the manufacturing process from steel melt to the finished product. This enables close control to be maintained over the material's properties from melt to melt and consistent machining quality from batch to batch to be offered.

Sanmac Hollow Bar is distributed exclusively in the UK by specialist stainless steel distributor TW Metals Ltd, based in Southampton. New generation Sanmac is available in a size range from 32mm OD x 20mm ID up to 250mm OD x 200mm ID. TW Metals is also able to offer a cut to length and first stag machining service, if required.

The product is available with the added benefit of a range of cemented-carbide tools, called M-Line, supplied by Sandvik Steel's sister company Sandvik Coromant.

Coromant M-Line comprises a range of cutting tools which have been developed together with Sandvik Steel especially for machining stainless steels. Designated GC 2000, there are three types, offering good resistance to thermal and mechanical wear. All have insert geometries with sharp, positive cutting edges and open chip breakers to facilitate low cutting forces, minimal built-up edge and burrs formation.
