Corrintec Ltd, the Winchester based UK specialists in cathodic protection, recently won a major contract to protect a steel jetty structure against corrosion in Brixham's fishing harbour.

The Devon harbour is one of an increasing number around the UK where accelerated low water corrosion on structural steelwork has become a problem as the result of oxygen producing bacteria.

In 1999, Corrintec were approached by Torbay Council to carry out a feasibility study to examine methods of protecting 12,000 square metres of immersed and buried steel sheet and box piling.

The £128,000 contract was won on the strength of Corrintec's technical and design proposals which were independently assessed by consulting engineers Posford Duvivier on behalf of Torbay Council and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF).

"Accelerated low water corrosion is becoming more common in UK harbours. Our scheme is based on ICCP technology which carefully monitors and regulates the electrical output to the anodes", said Adrian Littleword, project sales engineer.

This involved the installation of a completely automatic impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system using Corrintec's uniquely designed Morganode pile mounted anodes.

The conventional method of using seabed anodes was ruled out because of the many shipping movements within the harbour as well as its considerable tidal range.

When work began in June using local divers and electrical contractors, a total of 20 anodes were installed on the jetty structure and then connected electrically to a combined control panel/power unit. The system will continuously monitor the electrical potential at the steel/seawater interface to provide the optimum protection according to the state of the tide.
