£400,000 Kelvar orders in Singapore

Reflec's agent in Hong Kong reports that it has won two orders worth £400,000 for Kelvar anticorrosion coated ancillaries in Singapore. These will be used on the Singapore North East Mass Transit Railway Corporation (MTRC) and follow the successes Kelvar has had in being specified and widely used in both countries. These are part of the first phase of a five-year project to supply Kelvar coated components across the MTRC.

The first order is from Westinghouse Brakes Systems which is supplying components for the light railway's platform firescreen doors. Kelvar will be used to prevent corrosion on the doors and also to provide insulation to protect passengers from electric shocks. This follows official engineering approval for Kelvar to be specified on platform fire screen doors.

The second order is to supply Kelvar coated brackets. These will be used to support the GEC Althom wave-guide tubes which control the MTRC driverless trains. The supports are vital as wave-guide tubes are laid accurately to ensure uninterrupted transmission of the guidance system signals. If a bracket corrodes and the tube loses its alignment, driverless trains will be inoperable.

The brackets are purchased from a South African firm and coated by Reflec's approved contractor, Corrosion Controls Singapore. The South African firm, First Tech, has become a keen follower of Kelvar; they want to introduce it to their local market. With Kelvar's success in Singapore, a joint venture has been established by Corrosion Controls Singapore and Singapore Technology to exploit the anti-corrosion market in the Malaysian offshore oil industry and other civil engineering projects.

Currently Corrosion Controls Singapore is awaiting confirmation of three further contracts for the supply of Kelvar coated components; two are further orders for the Singapore MTRC and the other is for Terminal Three at Singapore Airport.

"While we are delighted with the success of Kelvar in Singapore, there are even more contracts for Kelvar in Hong Kong. Hong Kong will be the world's biggest building site for the next eight years and design engineers there are specifying Kelvar in the contracts as a matter of course. Already more than the £2.5 million of Kelvar coated components have been specified for existing infrastructure projects and Reflec's agent in Hong Kong is awaiting confirmation of further orders. With Kelvar being only 66 per cent of the price of stainless steel 316, we are confident Kelvar will become even more widely specified and used." commented Peter White, Reflec's chief executive.

Reflec plc has three divisions. First, the process division specialises in cryogenic and ambient grinding for industry, for its own reflective inks and its anti-corrosion coatings. Second, the reflective division is one of the world's major producers of reflective inks and its inks are currently exported to Australia, the Far East, Europe and the USA where they are largely used by the textile and fashion trade. Third, the coatings division produces Kelvar anti-corrosion coatings which are used in the protection of metal components in aggressive environments. Kelvar is in use in the Far East and the LTK on oil platforms, mass transit railways and power stations. The company employs 42 people and is based at Winsford, Cheshire.
