Elcometer Instruments Ltd, the Manchester-based specialist for coatings quality control equipment, has launched its edition of the Fitz's Atlas (Plate 2), the Elcometer Fitz's Atlas (EFA), to complement existing publications, the Protective Coatings Inspection Manual (PCIM) and the Visual Comparison Manual (VCM).

Plate 2 Elcometer Fitz's Atlas of Coating Effects

Prepared by a group of knowledgeable experts and compiled and edited by Brendan Fitzsimons, the Elcometer Fitz's Atlas is an aid to the coating inspection process covering many relevant topics and providing full colour illustrations of problems and defects associated with coating processes. Divided into six sections, the EFA describes the various stages in a corrosion protection coating process and, with more than 180 colour photographs to illustrate these topics, the reader can very quickly gain an understanding of the problems and their likely solution:

  • Welding faults. Process faults that must be corrected before the application of a coating including cracks, crater pipes, spatter, undercut, root concavity, etc.

  • Surface conditions. Covering bare steel to failed coating systems, this section is divided into two chapters dealing with issues of dry abrasive blasting and the principles of water jetting.

  • Dry abrasive blasting. Guidelines for dry abrasive blast cleaning of steel substrates for coating processes.

  • Water jetting. Photographs and tests for preparation by water jetting including fully-coated surfaces with various levels of coating breakdown. Degrees of flash coating are also covered.

  • Coating defects. Over 100 photographs of coating defects with descriptions, probable causes, prevention and repair advice.

  • Marine fouling. A comprehensive overview with 22 high quality photographs of marine fouling with classification of both marine plants and animals found on structures in the sea.
