Development of its manufacturing technology, particularly at its Sandvik Chomutov producing plant in the Czech Republic, has made AB Sandvik Steel a major supplier of coiled stainless steel tubing for the oil and gas industries.

Used subsea for umbilicals, flowlines, risers and downhole applications, Sandvik can now supply tubing in Corrosion Resistant Alloys (CRAs) up to 3in. inside diameter, joint welded and supplied on reels in lengths up to 25km.

In February of last year, Sandvik successfully completed the last part of a 33km order for 2in. inside diameter, grade SAF 2507, super duplex stainless steel tubing for the service lines in the riser towers for the Elf Exploration Angola/Girassol Project. The tubing was supplied joint welded, polypropylene coated and on reels.

Sandvik has also recently completed the supply of 256km of super duplex umbilical tubing for Shell's Conger and Malampaya, gas-to-power project in the Philippines. A total of 128km each of 0.5in. and 0.7in. diameter tubes have been supplied.

Two other major umbilical tubing orders are for the deepwater, Exxon Mica Project in the Mexican Gulf and for BP Amoco's South Everest production in the North Sea. Both were for super duplex stainless steel grade, SAF 2507. The tubing was applied to Kvaerner Oilfield Products to be made into umbilicals.
