United States: New AWWA Standard for Rilsan Coatings

Keywords: Coatings, Standards

Rislan polyamide 11 powders marketed by ATOFINA are an integral part of the latest US standard relating to the use of polyamide 11 coatings in the water industry.

Issued in the United States by the American Water Works Association (AWWA), the AWWA standard relates to polyamide 11 two- layer coatings for both the lining and outer coating of pipes, connectrons and fittings (ANSI/AWWA C224-01). This standard covers all aspects relating to the use of polyamide 11 coatings in water applications, i.e. materials, equipment, operators, primers, application methods, and procedures.

This standard is an extension of the world- wide standardisation work on the application of polyamide coatings in the water industry originally launched in France with the NFA 49-713 and NFA 49-714 standards. European and Japanese standards are also being drafted on the same subject.

The U.S. standard also complements the many existing certifications covering the use of Rilsan powders in contact with drinking water: DGS VS4/ 99-217 in France, WRAS and DWI in the United Kingdom, ATA in the Netherlands, DVGW in Germany, Circular 102 in Italy, as well as standards NBN S 29- 001 in Belgium, SABS 1217 in South Africa, BNQ 3660-950 in Canada and NSF 61 in the United States, making, it is believed, Rilsan one of the only materials with such a host of worldwide accreditations.

Additionally, Rilsan coatings meet the British BSI-WIS 4-52-01 and Dutch KIWA BRL K759-01 performance standards relating to anticorrosion coatings in water applications.

It is also reported that new grades of Rilsan polyamide powders have received French approval for contact with drinking water. Four Rilsan grades now fulfil the requirements of Circular DGS/VS4/N99.217.
