Galvanizing victory for war museum project

A galvanizing project undertaken by Worksop Galvanizing and featured in the newly opened Imperial War Museum-North has been awarded joint first prize in the Galvanizers Association Hot Dip Galvanizing Awards 2002 (Plate 3). Praised for its imaginative use of galvanizing, the architectural project forms an integral part of the museum complex and provided Worksop Galvanizing with the perfect opportunity to demonstrate its celebrated ability to handle challenging hot dip galvanizing projects.

The intricate tubular steel structure was manufactured by Yorkshire-based Westbury Tubular Structures and surrounds a 29 m viewing tower affording views of the Manchester Ship Canal and city centre.

Worksop Galvanizing, a Wedge Group Galvanizing company, was charged with the task of hot dip galvanizing the awkwardly shaped tubular sections, which featured connecting stubs and measured up to 16m in length.

Although the company’s 21 m long galvanizing bath proved more than adequate for the 250 tonne consignment of large steel components, other considerations made this a particularly challenging project.
