New qualification

New qualification

A new qualification for the surface coatings industry has recently been launched. Called the “Certificate in Coatings Technology”, the qualification enables people to choose the topics they need in surface coatings technology to achieve a nationally recognised award.

Stephen Falder, chairman of the Coatings Industry Training Forum, said, “BCF and its members have taken the lead in the UK by providing a unique qualification that provides flexibility and relevance to industry needs. This Certificate is a revolution in qualification design.”

The Certificate is designed to offer accreditation for anyone who needs either an appreciation or an in-depth understanding of coatings’ technology in formulation, manufacture or application. A Certificate in Coatings Technology is available at levels 2 and 3 (Foundation and Advanced), with a level 4 qualification, degree level. Awarded by the UK’s City and Guilds, the Certificate is recognised by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority and is part of the National Framework.

To achieve a Certificate, students select and successfully complete any 6 modules from a range of 62 different titles in BCF’s open tech ON LINE modular training programme, which covers all aspects of coatings’ formulation, manufacture and application. If people want to study a single module, a Unit Award is available for satisfactory completion of individual modules.

This system means that students are able to construct their own training programme and qualification to suit their job requirements. This choice is the first of its type in the UK, and provides a model in providing demand-led training and qualification for business.
