Chalco and Henan government join hands to further develop aluminum industry

The Aluminum Corp. of China (Chalco), China's largest aluminum producer, recently signed an agreement with the provincial government of central China's Henan Province, the country's largest aluminum production province, to further cooperate in the aluminum industry.

The agreement was reached after negotiations over the past 2 years. The tie-up was established to help achieve sustainable development amid the strong international competition following China's WTO entry. Through establishing the strategic partnership, Chalco will try to overcome its resource shortages and Henan will aim to speed up the optimization of its industry structure.

Under the agreement, the fields of cooperation will be the unified production of coal, power and aluminum, including alumina, electrolytic aluminum and processed aluminum products.

Chalco has two branches in Henan, capable of producing a combined 2 million tons of alumina every year, making it the largest alumina production base of the country. The local electrolytic aluminum companies in Henan have an aggregate annual production capacity of around 870,000 tons, contributing more than one fifth of the country's total. By the end of 2005, the province plans to raise its annual alumina output to 3 million tons.
