FSCT announces Call for Papers for 2003 Annual Meeting – student papers and posters solicited

The Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology is seeking technical papers to be considered for presentation at the FSCT 81st Annual Meeting Program, to be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, in Philadelphia, PA, on 12-14 November 2003. Held in conjunction with the International Coatings Expo, the FSCT's Annual Meeting will feature a variety of program sessions on the leading technical work in the industry. The theme for ICE 2003 is "Spirit of Innovation". The deadline for submission of abstracts is 3 February 2003 (After abstracts are accepted for the Annual Meeting, authors will be required to submit a paper for publication in the ICE 2003 Annual Meeting Program Proceedings by 15 September 2003. Those authors who wish their papers to be considered for the John A. Gordon Best Paper Award must submit their papers by 19 May 2003.)

The Annual Meeting Program Committee, chaired by Dr Raymond H. Fernando, of Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, CA, is soliciting presentations in the following areas:

  • technology transitioning,

  • environmental stewardship,

  • non-polluting coatings,

  • recycling of paint,

  • application variances,

  • consumer impact on technology trends,

  • high throughput screening,

  • combinatorial techniques,

  • molecular modeling,

  • efficient use of the internet, and

  • other advances pertinent to the spirit of innovation.

Please provide a 75-100 word abstract by 3 February 2003, along with contact information (author name(s), company name, address, telephone, fax, and E-mail address) to: Rod Moon, Director of Education, FSCT, 492 Norristown Rd, Blue Bell, PA 19422- 2350. John A. Gordon Best Paper Award Competition

The John A. Gordon Best Paper Award will be presented for the best paper contributed to the Annual Meeting Technical Program. Members of the FSCT Annual Meeting Program Committee will consider all of the papers presented (excluding those submitted specifically for other Annual Meeting paper competitions) based on: (1) technical merit, including objectivity and experimental design; (2) relevance to coatings technology and its impact on the industry; and (3) presentation effectiveness, both in print and orally. The author(s) of the John A. Gordon Best Paper Award will receive a total of $1,000 cash award and an inscribed certificate.

This award commemorates the many contributions that noted educator John A. Gordon made to the coatings profession.

A.L. Hendry Awards Competition

Undergraduate student authors are encouraged to submit entries in the 2003 Alfred L. Hendry Award Competition, sponsored by the Southern Society for Coatings Technology.

This year's award features cash prizes to both the student author (or authors) and the author's sponsoring lab. The student receives a $1,000 cash award and expenses covering attendance at the FSCT Annual Meeting and International Coatings Expo in Philadelphia, PA, on 12-14 November, to receive the honor and a suitably inscribed certificate for the best paper submitted for the competition. In addition, the laboratory of the sponsoring school will receive a grant of $500.

The competition is administered by the FSCT Annual Meeting Program Committee and several committee members will judge the entries.

Submitted papers must describe the results of original research on a subject related to coatings technology, or present a significantly insightful, comprehensive review of a field of coatings technology. Work done on coatings related topics as part of an undergraduate research project or as a senior thesis is appropriate for submission.

Those wishing to enter the competition must send a letter of intent, along with the title of the proposed paper and a brief abstract, by 3 February, 2003 to: Hendry Awards Committee, c/o FSCT, 492 Norristown Rd., Blue Bell, PA 19422-2350. The deadline for receipt of manuscripts is 19 May, 2003.

The A.L. Hendry Award, sponsored by the Southern Society for Coatings Technology, commemorates the industry contributions of the late Alfred L. Hendry, President of A.L. Hendry Co. in Tampa, FL. He was a past-president of the Southern Society and an active participant in many of FSCT's educational activities.

Poster Sessions

Students are also encouraged to submit an entry into the Poster Session. This competition is designed to provide a forum for individuals who are involved in coatings research by serving as a non-commercial arena for new ideas, new techniques, preliminary results, and/or work that is significant but not fully completed.

Each entry will be provided a display board to highlight his/her research project and will be required to staff the poster during scheduled times. The Poster Session will be held in the exhibit hall and will be on display during exhibit hours. All displays will be judged on a scheduled basis during the times they are required to be staffed using the following criteria: originality/novelty, scientific content, and quality of display. Participation in the Poster Session is at the discretion of the FSCT Annual Meeting Program Committee.

FSCT will offer awards for the best student poster displayed: first place – $500; second place – $300; and third place – $200.

The deadline for entry into the competition is 29 August, 2003; however, if you would like to have your name, research project, and institution listed in the final ICE 2003 brochure, you must submit your entry by 16 June 2003.

The market raiders

"Market raiders" are set to seize more of the market from over half of the industry next year, according to research from the new 1st Edition 2003 Plimsoll Portfolio Analysis: Metal Treatments.

Simply hanging on to sales has proven a serious problem for companies in 2002. Half of the industry failed to grow at all. Yet a group of 102 companies, Plimsoll calls "market raiders" captured 14 per cent of the market and grew by a staggering 29 per cent on average – a growth far better than the industry average.

Given the aggressive nature of these "raiders" many companies are set to suffer next year. Named and analysed in the new 1st Edition 2003 analysis are half of the industry that are set to be hit the hardest. These 194 companies are falling behind dropping almost –12 per cent of sales over the last 12 months. Plimsoll believes these companies are in danger of withering away.

Another group Plimsoll believes the "raiders" will target the 101 companies struggling to hold on to existing sales. "These companies are effectively standing still and it is almost as if they are missing an opportunity. The 'raiders' are proving there is a buoyant market out there for those who know where to look", says David Pattison, Senior Analyst at Plimsoll.

Fifty four of the "raider" companies Plimsoll named and analysed in the latest edition of the Metal Treatments analysis have made significant sacrifices in maintaining this raiding strategy. These 54 "market raiders" are at high financial risk as a result of high debts financing this growth. It is arguable that this strategy is unsustainable. Yet, with an enviable market share these are precisely the companies that could make for a marvellous acquisition.
