South Yorkshire, UK, is to be the target of TWI's latest expansion plans. The region is currently the focus of massive efforts to regenerate its economy after being the industrial heartland of Britain's iron and steel production for nearly two centuries.

In a concerted bid to accelerate innovatory techniques like laser processing and friction stir welding, TWI has sought an industrial platform from which it could face increasing foreign competition. It sees this initiative, which will embrace enhanced technology transfer, ideally suited to its aspirations.

The Centre, which is expected to result in £17M investment over a 6 years period is supported by a grant of £2,8M from the European Regional Development Fund through the Objective 1 Programme for South Yorkshire. Yorkshire Forward, the Regional Development Agency for the Yorkshire and Humber, is also providing support.

The Yorkshire project provides TWI with the chance to build on locally established long-term relationships and also to attract new partners into the fold. Indeed TWI will be in good company at the new centre of excellence. Among its close neighbours are no lesser enterprises than Corus and Castings Technology International.
