Galvanizer helps building completion in time for pitter-patter of jumbo feet

Galvanizing company Pillar Wedge, part of the Wedge Group, has helped Knowsley Safari Park and agricultural steel building manufacturer RE buildings win the race to build an elephant enclosure in time for two “unexpected” arrivals.

Events began in 2001 when the foot and mouth epidemic restricted the travel of livestock and thus prevented routine health scans being carried out on two elephant cows. When travel restrictions were finally lifted, and the animals scanned in June/July 2002, their keepers were thrilled (and amazed) to learn that both were pregnant and the race was on to get a new elephant enclosure and penning finished in time for the arrival of the two calves due in early 2003.

Thanks to the sterling efforts of the Safari Park, RE Buildings and Pillar Wedge, the £1/2 million enclosure was finished in time for the births of “Ashanti,” weighing in at 220lbs in January, and “Nala” in April. Ashanti's birth was a particular cause for celebration as she was the first elephant to be born at the Safari Park.

RE Buildings, which also built the Safari Park's rhino and giraffe houses, is one of the leading manufacturers of agricultural buildings and a winner of Business Link North's “Rural Business of the Year.” The company uses Pillar Wedge extensively for its galvanizing requirements. Company spokesperson Hazel Ronson commented: “The quality of the galvanizing supplied by Pillar Wedge helps us sell our product and is a key part of our success story.”

Mining Directory is bought by leading publisher

Kogan Page, Europe's largest independent publisher of business and management books, has bought the Mining Directory from business year book and directory specialists Don Nelson Publications Ltd.

First published 23 years back, the Directory is published annually. The new edition, out in April 2004, contains all the mining companies of the world together with the principal mining equipment manufacturers. It also includes international mining consultants and service companies, plus the largest and most comprehensive “Buyers Guide” in the mining industry.

“We are delighted to be taking over this leading directory in a most important area,” affirms Philip Kogan, Founder and Director of Kogan Page. He continues: “It will form part of Kogan Page publications programme which will increasingly become involved in high quality reference titles covering subjects such as national resources and international business.”

Don Nelson, of Don Nelson Publications, remarks: “It has been very satisfying to have started this Directory 23 years back. It has always been successful and I am happy to be able to hand it over to an excellent publishing company – Kogan Page”.
