Riker Ltd wins Fluke sponsored award

Development company, Riker Ltd, has won The Measurement Solutions for Industry Award at the prestigious National Measurement Awards 2003.

The award, sponsored by Fluke, was presented to Christopher Langridge, Founder and Managing Director of Riker, for the development of hand- portable precision high current injection testing equipment.

The London Underground first presented the common problem in railways of calibrating traction supply circuit breakers. With a typical weight of 500 kg, transporting them to a fixed test site was expensive and logistically difficult and the idea of bringing a 6 tonne 10 kA test installation to sub-stations was almost unthinkable. Similar problems faced other industries such as nuclear power stations, which have large battery back up supplies whose protection is not readily accessible.

Riker developed a hand-portable 10 kA Breaker Calibration and Test Equipment, BRECAT, to solve this problem. This was soon followed by the CAT 5000, a 5 kA injection current module weighing 30 kg. Being about 100 times lighter than conventional installations these two devices have opened up the possibility of on-site testing with minimum inconvenience and cost.

“The prestige and recognition of this National Measurement Award will help to raise the profile and integrity of our products, and inspire us to further innovative solutions which match industry needs,” he said.

The Measurement Solutions for Industry Award (Category Three of the National Measurement Awards) acknowledges those novel measurement solutions that have been successfully implemented in the industry and have resulted in significant benefit, particularly with regard to the creation of wealth.
