Massive new expansion for Niro Drying Test Centre

Niro in Denmark is investing massively in an expansion of its test centre at its Copenhagen head office, with new funding from the GEA Group. When complete, the test centre will be the largest of its type in Europe, with over 35 different pilot plants available for its customers' use.

The test centre already has a huge range of equipment for process and product evaluation including: spray drying, freeze drying, extraction, agglomeration and laboratory facilities. Over the next six months, however, it will be expanded with additional equipment including: swirl fluidiser and spray fluidiser technology specifically for drying pastes, filter cakes and highly viscous liquids.

The Niro Test Centre is available for customers to use for product and process evaluation. This allows them to test products for quality and properly evaluate processes prior to scale up to full production. The test centre is also used by Niro customers for drying batches of product for short run projects (Plate 1).

Niro also has a separate pharma test centre at the Copenhagen site operating under full GMP and approved by the Danish Medical Board for the production of drugs for clinical trials. It has a clean room rating of 100,000 and the process control is full 21 CFR part 11 compliant. The pharma test centre's equipment includes the PSD 4, PSD 1 and SD Micro equipment to provide the widest possible range of spray drying technology for realistic testing and easy scale-up to full production. The centre can evaluate spray drying processes using both aqueous and organic solvent feeds.

The new Pharma test centre, and the expansion of the existing drying test centre, makes Niro's test facilities in Copenhagen the most extensive and sophisticated in Europe and a valuable resource for all its customers.
