Scottish Galvanizers provides “one-stop shop” for even longer-lasting protection

Scottish Galvanizers Ltd of Glasgow has formed a new partnership with powder coating specialists McGregor Young Ltd and is now able to offer its many customers a “one-stop shop” for maximum protection of steel items including palisade fencing, railings, playground equipment, street furniture, signage and much more.

Powder coating treatment – applied to items which have already been galvanized by the “hot-dip” process – further enhances the longevity of the steel by the spraying of a dry powder coating which is then baked to provide a tough outer layer. This extends the protection from the galvanizing, which can protect for 50 years or more, and also has the further advantage of giving a smooth, coloured and aesthetic appearance to the steel.

Paul Cameron of Scottish Galvanizers Ltd, which is part of the Wedge Group, the UK's largest independent galvanizing business, said the new partnership marked the beginning of a new era for the company: “We are now able to offer a complete service to our customers based on our long experience of galvanizing and McGregor Young Ltd's well-recognized position as a leading specialist in powder coating. It increases our competitive position in the market place by making us a 'one-stop shop' for our customers”.

He said that steel products which customers required to be powder- coated would first be galvanized by Scottish Galvanizers Ltd, then transported to McGregor Young Ltd's state-of-the-art 13,500 sqft powder coating facilities at nearby Coatbridge, Glasgow, before being supplied to the customer.

McGregor Young Ltd has two powder application systems and a sophisticated pre-treatment process. The larger of the two systems incorporates a 20 m straight oven with a fully automated 90 m running track. This system can handle customer product of up to 8 m long x 2 m high x 600 mm wide and to a maximum weight of 200 kg. The second system comprises a double pass oven accommodating work of up to 3 m x 2 m x 600 mm with a weight capacity of 200 kg.

Scottish Galvanizers Ltd is Scotland's leading galvanizing specialist, equipped with a modern, fully-enclosed galvanizing bath measuring 13.4 m x 1.2 m x 2.95 m, with the capacity for processing steelwork up to 20 m long. Other services provided by the company by arrangement include blast cleaning and passivation.
