The US Environmental Protection Agency has awarded its Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award to BASF's Automotive Refinish Coatings business for the company's eco-efficient UV-curable primer.

Patrick Prevost, president chemicals, plastics and performance products, BASF Corporation, accepted the award at the tenth Annual Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award celebration recently held at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington on 20 June 2005. “We are very pleased to receive this award. It is a decisive validation of our strategy to develop intelligent and eco-efficient solutions,” Prevost said.

The eco-efficiency analysis showed that, compared to conventional thermal-cured products, the new primer from BASF cures ten-times faster. Since UV-curing is light-activated and does not rely on heat, it eliminates the need for bake ovens. As a result, the energy consumption in a body shop is significantly reduced by approximately 80 percent.

“Finding a balance between the economic, environmental and social needs of today's society without impairing the development opportunities of future generations is one of our essential objectives,” said Rainer Blair, Group Vice President for BASF's coatings businesses in North America and the Global Automotive Coatings Solutions business. “The development of this UV-curing primer shows that we do not only talk about sustainability, but also act accordingly.”

The Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge awards have been presented annually since 1996 by the US Environmental Protection Agency to recognize businesses and individuals who have discovered innovative ways to significantly reduce pollution at its sources and have used chemistry to improve the environment. Nominations for the awards are judged by an independent panel of technical experts convened by the American Chemical Society on behalf of representatives for government, industry, academia and the non-profit sector.
