Humber gives “worldwide protection” to grain silos

Humber Galvanizing Ltd of Hull is playing a vital role in helping a leading UK exporter of grain storage silos to achieve outstanding sales successes all around the world.

The galvanized silos, manufactured by Bentall Rowlands Storage Systems Ltd of Scunthorpe, are supplied to millers and grain distributors in countries as far apart as the Ukraine, South America, Tanzania, Mozambique, Russia and Egypt, whose diverse climates provide some of the harshest tests for the galvanizing protection process anywhere in the world.

The latest silo which has been galvanized successfully by Humber Galvanizing Ltd was destined for Port Said on the Suez Canal.

Tony Linsley of Humber Galvanizing Ltd said that the company was being contracted by its customer to galvanize all parts of the silos, including support steelwork, platforms, ladders and other structural steel.

He explained that galvanizing the silos was the ideal method of protecting the silos in order to withstand different climate conditions including very cold and wet weather in countries such as Ukraine and Russia and even in coastal regions in hot countries where the steel would be required to withstand high levels of salt from sea-water.

Rex Hilton, Sales Director of Bentall Rowlands Storage Systems Ltd (Plate 1), said: “We are currently achieving our best ever orders, including a £2m order from Sudan and a $2m order in Tanzania.”

“All our silos are manufactured in Scunthorpe and they are 100 per cent galvanized. The galvanizing is an essential part of the manufacturing process.”

He said that the grain storage silos ranged from units which hold 500-10,000 tonnes of grain, the largest being 27 m in diameter and 110 ft tall.

Humber Galvanizing Ltd, based at Citadel Trading Park, is equipped with a state-of-the-art fully enclosed galvanizing bath measuring 5.5×1.2×2.8 m, which meets all current European and British environment-protection regulations.
