Alcoa updates davenport works with the addition of a plate aging furnace

Alcoa is updating their Davenport, Iowa facility with the recent purchase of a new Age Oven to process £230,000 (104,326 kg) loads of aluminum plate products.

The SECO/WARWICK Age furnace produces tight uniformity by utilizing reversing airflow to eliminate the formation of “hot side” and a “cold side” on the load. By automatically reversing the airflow at regular intervals, the entire load is brought up to temperature at a more nearly uniform rate. Thus, the amount of temperature spread within the load is reduced, and the resulting metallurgical properties are more uniform.

The electric heating system for the furnace is divided into six equal zones of PID temperature control and each zone will incorporate SECO/ WARWICK bayonet resistance heating electric elements. This new order will be the second SECO/WARWICK Aging furnace in the davenport plant; the first unit has been in operation since 1999.

SECO/WARWICK will provide turnkey installation, scheduled for autumn 2005.
