World Surface Coatings Abstracts (WSCA) is celebrating its 80th year serving the paint industry

The journal's first issue appeared under the title “Review of current literature” relating to the paint, colour, and varnish industries in 1928, soon after the founding of the PRA itself. It has appeared regularly ever since; even during the problems of the 1940s, it continued to be produced, albeit in a slim version.

Its contents over the years have reflected the needs of the paint industry and the steady march of technology. Patents, an important source of information in their own right, were included part way through the first year of publication.

Available only in print in the beginning, the 1970s saw radical changes in the production methods with the advent of computers, and a variety of formats, such as CD-ROM and on-line searching, emerged with time. Computers also make feasible the production of extracts on themed topics (such as WSCA alerts).

The latest development is a newly designed front cover, a result of the PRA rebranding exercise.
