Safety comes first with SWC weighing cabinet

Article Type: Environment and safety From: Anti-Corrosion Methods and Materials, Volume 55, Issue 6

To provide a safe working environment for laboratory technicians without restricting the effective and ergonomic way in which they work, Sartorius has created the new safety weighing cabinet SWC.

Advances in drug research and development in the pharmaceutical and chemical industry have produced increasingly effective medicines and formulations. However, for researchers and laboratory technicians this progress has been associated with increased hazards in the routine handling of high-potency drugs and toxic or hazardous compounds.

The weighing process in particular poses a danger because many compounds are manipulated on the open bench during weighing.

The new safety weighing cabinet SWC was developed especially for the weighing of toxic or highly potent chemicals. The safety weighing cabinet has a highly stable mechanical construction made of 10 mm acrylic glass. Thanks to their ergonomic design, laboratory balances can be operated without any restriction.

The safety weighing cabinet allows the user a perfect view of the balance. The analyst can perform weighing standing up and can always look down from above through the angled front glass.

The safety weighing cabinet can be cleaned and decontaminated without opening the contained safety area. All internal parts of the cabinet can be reached from the outside, through the front opening.

Contaminated cleaning wipes can be safely disposed of through the waste disposal chute. Another major advantage of the Sartorius safety weighing cabinet is that the filter unit is separated from the cabinet.

The base of the SWC is made of granite, which ensures added stability and absorbs vibrations. Moreover, the black background makes it easier for the analyst to see even the slightest spillage.

The filter system is equipped with a Hepa filter with a retention rating of higher than 99.995 per cent. Thanks to the simple “bag in, bag out” system, the filter can be changed quickly and contamination-free.

If the flow drops below the minimum allowable level, an optical and acoustic alarm is triggered. The audit trail function of the alarm system can generate a reliable record, logging the times whenever the system not operated properly.

Sartorius SWC safety weighing cabinets are supplied in four different sizes. This affords the user a maximum of flexibility with regard to the space available at the laboratory workplace as well as the design criteria of the weighing workstation.
