Thermo Fisher Scientific introduces cost-effective diffuse reflectance accessory enabling rapid, accurate measurements for material science applications

Article Type: New materials and equipment From: Anti-Corrosion Methods and Materials, Volume 56, Issue 2

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, announced a new Thermo Scientific Diffuse Reflectance Accessory, specially designed to complement the powerful Evolution™ 300 UV-Visible spectrophotometer. The DRA-EV-300 is a cost-effective solution for material science and general QC measurements on solid materials. At half the price of some competitive systems the new accessory is affordable for a wide range of applications including inorganic chemistry, solid state physics, optical materials, plastics, pigments, coatings and nano powders.

The Thermo Scientific DRA-EV-300 Diffuse Reflectance Accessory accommodates a useable wavelength range of approximately 220 to approximately 1,100 nm. In competitive instruments, as much as three times more expensive, the extended wavelength range is only 900-1,100 nm. The internal coating of the DRA-EV-300 consists of a sintered PTFE material that enables excellent diffuse reflectance performance across the entire wavelength range. Pre-aligned optical configuration on a kinematic mount facilitates simple and convenient installation with no alignment.

The DRA-EV-300 also features horizontal reflectance sample mounting, safely holding samples in place with gravity. Other systems require spring mounted clips to hold a vertical sample in place which can often damage delicate surfaces. The gravity mounting lets scientists easily perform multiple measurements on a single spot of a sample without compromising integrity.

The DRA-EV-300 is designed to complement the Evolution 300, a high-performance, double-beam UV-Visible spectrophotometer which incorporates a high intensity and long life Xe flash lamp. The instrument achieves fast, reliable and flexible scanning, fixed wavelength analysis and a variety of other measurements including color calculations and various materials calculations.
