Victrex safety, health and environment performance recognized with fourth RoSPA President’s Award

Article Type: Environment and safety From: Anti-Corrosion Methods and Materials, Volume 57, Issue 6

Victrex plc has won The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) President’s Award for the fourth consecutive year. The award is made in recognition of achieving a very high level of performance, demonstrating well-developed occupational safety, health and environment management systems and culture, outstanding control of risk and very low levels of error, harm and loss over a sustained period of time.

Victrex Polymer Solutions is a division of Victrex plc and is a leading provider of high-performance polyaryletherketones, including Victrex® PEEK™ polymer, VICOTE® coatings, and APTIV™ films.

Commenting on receiving this year’s award, Simon Evans, SHE & Quality Manager at Victrex plc said, “Being honored by RoSPA with The President’s Award again this year validates our ongoing efforts surrounding the management of safety and health related issues.” He added, “At Victrex, we are never complacent where safety and health issues are concerned, we continuously set ourselves targets for improvement and to motivate our employees and raise awareness surrounding these critically important issues.”

David Rawlins, Awards Manager at RoSPA said, “Victrex plc has shown a commitment to protecting the health and well-being of its employees and others. Organizations which do this deserve to have such dedication recognized and that’s where RoSPA Awards come in.” Rawlins added, “As well as there being clear ethical reasons and legal requirements for good health and safety management, there is also a strong business case. RoSPA is delighted to publicly honor organizations which have demonstrated their work to improve performance in this sphere.”

For more than 50 years, The RoSPA scheme has been the UK’s most highly respected occupational health and safety awards program, it is sponsored by NEBOSH (The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health), the country’s leading health and safety professional examining board. The President’s Award is widely recognized as one of the most prestigious of the scheme’s awards. It is only presented to companies that can clearly demonstrate ongoing commitment to raising standards through the implementation of management systems and the achievement of a high level of performance surrounding safety, health and environment over a sustained period of more than ten years, in fact Victrex has met this stringent criteria for 13 consecutive years.

The awards scheme is not only about reducing the number of accidents and cases of ill-health at work; it also encourages organizations to develop robust health and safety management systems. RoSPA has urged UK firms not to ignore safety during the economic downturn, warning that as operating budgets tighten there is a danger that occupational health and safety could be seen as a luxury item rather than a necessity.

“At Victrex, we firmly believe that good health and safety performance go hand in hand with good business performance. It’s only through the sustained efforts of each member of our team in implementing our in-house systems that we have been successful in maintaining our excellent health and safety record.” Evans explained, “Being able to demonstrate our safety credentials to our customers through this and our other RoSPA President’s Awards is something that we are appreciative of. The Board of Directors of Victrex plc remains fully committed to ensuring that the company’s occupational health and safety management systems adhere to the world’s best practice and it is constantly looking for ways to enhance or improve in this and every other area of the business.”
