New low-viscosity resin for floor coating and corrosion protection

Article Type: New materials and equipment From: Anti-Corrosion Methods and Materials, Volume 60, Issue 4

At the European Coatings Show taking place in Nuremberg in March, Bayer MaterialScience showcased its new polyaspartic binder Desmophen® NH 2850 XP. This is characterized in particular by its very low viscosity, which simplifies the formulation of solvent-free topcoats for decorative floor coatings. In addition, the binder can be used as a reactive thinner to achieve 100 percent solids systems for corrosion protection.

Solvent-free two-component floor coatings based on a combination of Desmophen® NH 2850 XP and established Desmophen® NH binders and Desmodur® N curing agents can be applied very easily by roller or brush. They cure rapidly, even at temperatures below 10°C. “Several layers of such polyaspartic systems can be applied in the course of one day – and the next day you can already walk on the floor,” says Karl-Heinrich Wührer, coating raw materials expert at Bayer MaterialScience. The coatings thus help to keep downtimes on the construction site to a minimum and save costs. In permanent use later on they are very resistant to abrasion and chemicals and have high lightfastness. 100 percent solids systems for corrosion protection benefit from the binder because it makes them easier to apply. Polyaspartic technology can fully play out its benefits over other solvent-free coatings, one being its quick drying. What’s more, a single layer is often sufficient to give the substrate long-term protection against the destructive force of moisture or salt water (Figure 2).
