Italian helicopter maker buys Ultraseal sealing system

Augusta, one of Europe's leading helicopter manufacturers, has installed an Ultraseal Caskade impregnation system utilising the UK company's methylacrylate sealant at its Casina Costa factory, near Milan.

The near £300,000 export contract was won by the Coleshill based impregnation specialist Ultraseal International against fierce competition. As well as supplying the Caskade system and consumables, Ultraseal is contracted to provide fixtures and baskets for use by the customer.

Says Export Sales Manager Steve Downes: "The Caskade system will be used to treat finish machined cast aluminium alloy and cast magnesium alloy components, used within the helicopter transmission system, in order to qualify machined material during production." Because throughput of parts for the system is in moderate volume, the company has elected for manual loading.

Ultraseal's system will be installed as part of a larger overall investment in the plant that includes automated deburring and dye penetrant testing following machining. Process parameters for impregnation include a combination of vacuum and pressure due to the types of materials followed by rotation of the parts to drain off excess material. A cold water rinse then precedes a hot wash stage to finally cure the sealant.
