New methods for estimating fatigue life of components and structures

ESDU International's Strength Analysis Group has issued a new design engineering Data Item that contains two methods for estimating the fatigue life of components subjected to variable amplitude loading.

Such estimates are vital when designing new components and when monitoring existing structures. The new Data Item ( No. 95006)is entitled: "Fatigue life estimation under variable amplitude loading using cumulative damage calculations".

Guidance is given on the types of data required, which may include endurance data, stress or strain concentration data or data pertaining to, for example, the effect of a surface treatment or fretting.

Both the calculation of the stresses for the stress life method and the use of strain life data are described. Two algorithms for defining and counting cycles are also given.
