Fluid flow control devices for an aircraft powerplant

In GB Patent 2311623 British Aerospace plc describe a VSTOL aircraft powerplant. It comprises a gas turbine engine, a chamber for receiving exhaust from the turbine section of the engine and a jet propulsion nozzle and vertical lift nozzles connected to the chamber. Blocker doors are provided, blocking flow of exhaust from the chamber to the nozzle. Control means co-ordinate and control the operation of the blocker doors and an air curtain to vary the total efflux between three configurations, namely all efflux occurring through the jet propulsion nozzle for wing-borne flight. All efflux occurring through the vertical lift nozzle for hovering and some efflux, which is steplessly variable, occurring through both the vertical lift nozzles and the jet propulsion nozzle for transition between wing-borne and jet-borne flight. The air curtain is generated from cold, dense high pressure air supplied through ducts.
