Perkins named design consultant on two-stroke compression ignition light aircraft engine

Perkins Technology, Inc., has been named design consultant on a two-stroke compression ignition, direct-injection light aircraft engine for Teledyne Continental Motors, Muskegon, Michigan. A team led by Teledyne was awarded to cooperative agreement by NASA in April 1997 to develop a new, internal combustion (IC) engine under its General Aviation Propulsion (GAP) programme.

The engine, being developed under the three year GAP programme, will be flight demonstrated near the end of the programme. The two-stroke engine will burn Jet-A (aviation kerosene) fuel.

NASA and Teledyne's objectives are to reduce the acquisition cost of a new engine, improve reliability, lower maintenance costs and meet current and future noise and emissions requirements.
