Acal cuts the cost of avionics testing

The microsystems division of Acal Electronics reports that it has cut the cost of avionics testing with the introduction of the Ballard CM429-1 avionics databus interface to its range of computing peripheral devices.

The CM429-1 is an ARINC 429 interface housed in a rugged PCMCIA card. Used with a low-cost notebook or desktop PC, it replaces custom 429 test and maintenance equipment for functional test, simulation, data acquisition and bus monitoring.

The new interface can simultaneously receive, transmit and monitor databus activity on up to six ARINC channels. It features a powerful on-board digital signal processor and 64 Kbytes of memory to handle filtering of received words and scheduling of transmitted words without the aid of the host PC. The new bit-oriented (Williamsburg) protocol is also supported. The monitor records and time-tags bus activity sequentially for later analysis.

Custom applications can easily be developed using software included with the CM429-1. Applications can be integrated with the wide range of hardware and software products available for PC-based systems.
