"TREF" FIC EMC testing
Manufactured by Computing Devices of Hastings, the transportable reconnaissance exploitation facility (TREF), designed to support RAF Tornado GRi reconnaissance missions, has recently completed comprehensive testing by Assessment Services.
The TREF consists of four container-sized cabins which are joined together with flexible, walk through, shielded trunking to form the complete facility. TREF underwent EMC testing to MIL-STD 461D.
Owing to the very large size of the TREF, the facility had to be tested in an open area environment. As a consequence, Assessment Services' team of EMC engineers developed a number of innovative solutions in order to carry out certain tests, specified by the standards, which would normally be performed in a screened room.
A full suite of electromagnetic tests were performed. These included "tailored" E-Field susceptibility testing, the levels of which were derived from the shielding effectiveness of the TREF cabins.
Recent enhancements of the EMC facilities at Assessment Services ensure that the EMC performance of all products, whatever their size, can be assessed quickly and accurately against the widest range of national and international standards, both civil and military.
