Converter simplifies high accuracy dual-channel angular measurement

Keywords DDC, Resolver converter

DDC's hybrid SD-14620 resolver converter claims a very cost-effective means of obtaining high resolution digital angular feedback for servo systems. When used in conjunction with a resolver a high reliability electromagnetic transducer the converter can provide an angular resolution of 0.005 degrees.

The SD-14620 is contained in a 54 pin package measuring only 36.8 × 19.8 × 5.3mm (1.5 × 0.78 × 0.21in). It can accept two simultaneous resolver inputs and provide independent digital outputs, each of which can be switched between 10, 12, 14 and 16-bits resolution during operation.

The SDC-l4620 reportedly brings the benefits of space saving, cost effectiveness, low weight and noise immunity to applications such as motor control and robotics, radar antenna positioning, inertial platforms, gyro compasses and aircraft flight control.

The accuracy of the SD-14620 is ±2 or ±4 arc minutes ±1 LSB and each channel provides a ±4 volt DC, 1 per cent linear velocity signal which can replace a good quality electromechanical tachometer in servo loops.

The only external components required are a decoupling and filter capacitor. Each channel shares a common 16-bit digital output which is buffered with a three state transparent latch so that data may be transferred without disturbing the converter's tracking function.

The converter operates over the 0 to 70°C or 55 to +125°C operating temperature range and is available screened to MIL-STD-883. It requires a single +5 volt supply and weighs only 18 grams, making it particularly suitable for aerospace applications.
