Cranfield University Honorary Graduand

Rolls-Royce director, Colin Green received an Honorary Doctorate of Science from Cranfield University at a recent ceremony on Cranfield campus. The award is in recognition of his achievements in the field of aerospace propulsion.

Born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, in 1948, Colin Green was educated at Birkenhead School and Bristol University. He became director of operations for Rolls-Royce plc in March 1998, having been a member of the board since April 1996, exactly 30 years after first joining the company.

His first appointment, on completion of his apprenticeship, was at the company's Industrial and Marine Division, at Ansty, in 1973 as a development engineer on the industrial RB211. After a variety of positions in the group, he was made responsible for the Rolls-Royce industrial business activities in the oil and gas sector. He undertook a business administration course at Harvard University and gained practical experience in marketing power generation equipment, before returning to the aero engine business in 1985.

He became head of project, European Fighter Engine, later managing director of Eurojet Turbo gmbh. Based in Munich, the four-nation consortium was responsible for developing the EJ200 engine for the Eurofighter 2000. During the period 1989-1995, when he was appointed to the Allison Engine Company, he held the positions of director, Military Engines in Bristol, and managing director of Roll-Royce's Military Aero Engine Business.
