Connector provides robust coaxial cable terminations

Keywords Connectors, Raychem

Raychem is introducing an RF connector that terminates coaxial cables in one quick, easy step to make reliable, high-performance terminations (Plate 6).

Raychem's new RF one-step BNC and TNC connectors incorporate a single-piece inner assembly that terminates the centre conductor and screen of coaxial cables used in aviation and military equipment, as well as in instruments and communications equipment. With a cable retention strength of up to 90 kilogrammes, this new device creates a robust soldered and insulated termination on 50- and 75-ohm cables.

"The new RF one-step connector provides exceptional built-in strain relief that enables the connection to stand up to rough handling or harsh conditions such as extensive vibration", said Brian Procter, European marketing manager. "It addresses equipment manufacturers' needs to reduce assembly time while meeting the requirement for stronger and more rugged strain relief in cable connections. Its robust nature also leads to considerably reduced overall lifecycle costs."

Typical applications of the new RF one-step product in the military world include audio/video communications leads which are subject to frequent mate and demate handling or flexure, on-board interconnects for "smart" military ordnance and RPVs, video surveillance cameras and antennae.

The new device utilizes Raychem's innovative SolderSleeve and SolderShield termination technology, to provide a fluxed solder delivery system inside a transparent, heat-shrinkable sleeve. When heated, the solder melts and the sleeve shrinks to create a connection that is fully insulated and strain-relieved. The connectors are supplied with an adhesive-lined, heat-shrinkable sleeve that seals the termination against moisture and provides additional strain relief.

To complete an installation, technicians simply slide the new RF one-step connector on to the end of the cable and apply heat with a standard heat gun. The installation can, reportedly, be completed in less than a minute and requires fewer tools and less skill than comparable devices.

RF one-step connectors are available in three sizes that accommodate a broad range of standard RG/U cables and Raychem Cheminax coaxial cables. They are fully intermateable with MIL-C-39012 connectors and meet the performance requirements of MIL-C-39012 up to 2.8 GHz.
