Keywords Acoustics, Publication

Acoustics is defined generally as the science that deals with the production, control, transmission, reception and effects of sound. Acoustics, sound and vibration relate to everything from the design of a concert hall to the workings of a stereo system to the intricacies of the human ear.

Focusing on the design and engineering aspects of acoustics and vibration, the Handbook of Acoustics is a single-volume desk reference to complement the comprehensive coverage of the four-volume Encyclopedia of Acoustics.

Contents include:

  • general linear acoustics;

  • non-linear acoustics and cavitation;

  • aeroacoustics and atmospheric sound;

  • underwater sound;

  • ultrasonics, quantum acoustics and physical effects of sound;

  • mechanical vibration and shock;

  • statistical methods in acoustics;

  • noise: its effects and control;

  • speech communication;

  • music and musical acoustics;

  • acoustical measurements and instrumentation; and

  • transducers.

Malcolm J. Crocker is a distinguished university professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Auburn University, where he teaches and conducts research sponsored by industry and government in acoustics, noise and vibrational control. He is also the editor of the critically acclaimed Encyclopedia of Acoustics. He has published 80 refereed papers and 12 previous books on acoustics and noise control.
