FiberSIM software from Composite Design Technologies, Inc. (CDT), Waltham, Massachusetts, has been selected as the tool of choice to perform composites design at Lockheed Martin Tactical Aircraft Systems (LMTAS), Fort Worth, Texas. FiberSIM will be used on the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) AAD program as well as future programs.

FiberSIM is a software application that transforms existing CATIA, Pro/ENGINEER and Unigraphics CAD systems into high-performance tools for designing and manufacturing composite parts.

The JSF is a next-generation, multirole strike fighter being developed for the US Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and the UK's Royal Navy. The JSF will provide next century capabilities at an affordable cost. Lockheed Martin received one of the two JSF Concept Demonstration contracts the Department of Defense awarded on 16 November 1996. The winner of this phase of the competition will proceed to Engineering and Manufacturing Development phase beginning in early 2001. The Joint Strike Fighter is expected to enter service in about 2008. Approximately 3,000 Joint Strike Fighters are planned for the US Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and the UK's Royal Navy, replacing several current aircraft types. Lockheed Martin is teamed with Northrop Grumman and British Aerospace on the JSF program.

FiberSIM is a suite of software tools integrated into popular CAD systems that reduces the cost and time required to design and manufacture composites. The FiberSIM suite includes the Composite Engineering Environment (CEE), CEE-Documentation. Flat pattern/producibility, Laminate properties, Flat pattern export, Laser projection, and Tool surface generation applications. FiberSIM improves the entire composite engineering process by helping designers quickly create and transition accurate designs, drawings and related data from preliminary design, through detailed design and ultimately onto the manufacturing floor. FiberSIM applications are tightly integrated into the customer's CAD/CAM/CAE environment. All interaction is with the familiar CAD user interface, using standard and custom menus. The applications evaluate native CAD geometry and display results within the CAD system without translation or approximation.

Founded in 1991, CDT was the first company to recognize the need for the treatment of composite materials in the CAD environment. Staffed by engineers who have first hand, in-depth knowledge of the composites industry, CDT continues to be the world market leader in creating solutions for composite design and manufacturing.
